There are 3 main classes of membership: Full, Associate and Affiliate.
Full membership shall be limited to those persons who:
Associate membership is for those members who fulfil the criteria for Membership of the Society who are not Fellows of The Australian Orthopaedic Association but have obtained Associate Membership status within that organisation or as a minimum, an equivalent qualification with a recognised Orthopaedic Association. Associate status may only be conferred for a period of three years from the time of acceptance of a successful application to the Society but may be extended for greater than 3 years at the discretion of the Executive.
Associate Members have the same entitlements and obligations as do full members but are unable to vote at meetings of the Society.
Affiliate Membership shall be limited to medical practitioners not practising in orthopaedic surgery but with an interest in an area related to shoulder and elbow surgery.
Non medical scientists with an interest in this field and such other persons as the Executive in its absolute discretion thinks fit are eligible.
Applicants for FULL or ASSOCIATE membership must present a log book consisting of two consecutive years surgery
Approximately 30% of the surgery performed should be surgery of the shoulder or elbow. If the proposed member has a public hospital attachment that required a more general orthopaedic commitment, then this audit should be of the private practice sector that the member undertook their sub-specialist practice.
Applicants for FULL or ASSOCIATE membership must present a clinical or scientific paper at a general meeting of The Shoulder and Elbow Society prior to consideration of their application for membership
Applicants wishing to present a paper at a General Meeting are able to submit their paper for consideration to the Scientific Convenor of the meeting but may only attend and present as a guest of a Full Member.
Candidates for election as Full or Associate Members must be proposed and seconded in writing by two full members of the Society both of whom must be personally acquainted with the applicant. The suitability of all nominees for membership shall be examined by The Executive of the Society.
The application for membership shall be submitted for consideration by the Society as soon as practicable after the nomination is received by the Executive Committee.
Such nominations for membership should be in the hands of the Secretary not less than three months before The Annual General Meeting.
Each application for membership must include the completed application form, a CV of the applicant, a log book of cases and relevant details of publications or presentations applicable to shoulder and elbow surgery.
The Executive will determine whether applications meet the criteria for membership and if so circulate to all Full Members the names of such applicants and their proposer and seconder two months prior to the General Meeting of the Society.
On the election of a new member the Secretary shall notify the same in writing who will be requested to pay the subscription to the Treasurer. No person shall be deemed to be a member nor will his/her election, if made, be considered effective until he/she has paid subscription fees. Only one New Member may be nominated by each Full Member per year.
Candidates balloted for and not elected shall not be proposed again for election within a period of twelve months.
Candidates standing for election as an Affiliate Member must be proposed and seconded by two Full Members of the society both of whom must be personally acquainted with the applicant. Each application for Affiliate Membership shall be submitted for election as soon as practicable after his/her nomination is received by the Executive Committee. The application should be accompanied by the CV of the applicant along with documentation supporting the applicant's interest in and contribution to shoulder and elbow surgery.
On the election of a new Associate Member the Secretary shall notify the same in writing and shall request him/her to pay the subscription fee for Affiliates to the Treasurer. No person shall be deemed to be an Affiliate Member nor will his/her election be considered effective until he/she has paid subscription fees. Only one new Affiliate Member shall be nominated by each Full Member per year.
Full and Honorary Members of the Society are entitled to vote at the constitutionally convened Business Meetings of the Society or in any referendum that may be held.
This shall be payable to the Society by each of the Full, Associate and Affiliate Members, for every year during which he remains a member of the Society, on the first day of January in each year and shall be paid within three months of that date.
The subscription fees shall be such an amount as the Executive Committee shall from time to time determine and this fee shall include amounts for the annual subscription to the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. The Society, at a General Meeting may alter, vary or revoke this fee.
Members whose subscriptions remain unpaid for one year shall automatically cease to be members of the Society; such ex members may seek re-election on payment of arrears of their subscription and on making a formal application to the Honorary Secretary.
The fee for Affiliate Membership shall be 25% of the fee for a Full Membership and will entitle the Affiliate Member to notification of all Business and Scientific Meetings of the Society.
Honorary Members will not be required to pay an annual fee.
Membership may be terminated by the Executive following ratification by a Quorum of members at a general meeting and that termination should occur by letter from the secretary on behalf of the Executive. Membership may be terminated on the basis of failure to contribute to the scientific activities of the Society on at least one occasion in every three years.
On termination of membership no further correspondence or notices will be forwarded to the person concerned, but his/her name will be notified at the next General Meeting.
An appeal against termination of membership can be made to a General Meeting within twelve months of termination being announced at a meeting.
Members may resign by giving notification in writing to the Secretary at any time but membership fees will be non refundable.
